Do you have a cat that loves to drool on you? Chances are, he or she also enjoys kneading your hair with their little kitty paws.

But why do cats do this? And is there anything you can do to stop it? Read on to find out more about why cats drool and knead, and how to make sure they stay healthy and happy.

The Science Behind Why Cats Knead

When a cat kneads you, they are actually using an instinctual behavior that is based on their early days as kittens. When kittens are first born, they need to stimulate their mother’s milk production in order to get enough to eat.

They do this by kneading their mother’s belly with their paws. The pressure and movement help to release milk from the mammary glands, which the kitten can then drink.

As they grow older and no longer need to rely on their mother’s milk for sustenance, cats still retain this behavior. And while we may never know for sure why they do it, some experts believe that it provides them with a sense of comfort and security.
